ABOUT JAMIL MOODY

I am a photography enthusiast residing in Wichita, Kansas. I was born in Montgomery, Alabama and grew up in Protection, Kansas, a small rural town in the southwestern part of the state. Although I primarily concentrate on landscapes, I initially became interested in photography when my nephew was playing high school football and I was motivated to capture shots like those featured in Sports Illustrated. I quickly realized that the point-and-shoot camera that I was using had significant limitations, so I immersed myself in YouTube tutorials with a keen interest in figuring out how to make better images. As I began to accumulate knowledge and more suitable equipment, I quickly became more passionate about photography and have been captivated with the art ever since. While I occasionally engage in other genres of photography such as sports, concert, and portraiture, I’ve found that landscape photography is more compatible with my reclusive lifestyle.

Being a landscape photographer in Kansas can have it’s challenges, primarily because the scenery isn’t always as awe-inspiring as I’d like for it to be, but I’ve learned to develop an ability to see things differently and make the most of what is accessible to me. Someone once told me that if you want to be a better photographer, you simply need to stand in front of better stuff. So, from time to time, I do leave the backroads of Kansas and travel to more renowned locations like National Parks. While it’s hard to compete with the spectacular sights in Yosemite or the Grand Tetons, millions of sightseers flock to these iconic destinations every year which makes it difficult to capture images from a unique point of view. While I do enjoy exploring these iconic destinations, I relish the opportunity to meander around the rural countryside with my camera to reveal seldomly seen sights from the sparsely populated prairies of Kansas.

I’m a firm believer that there is beauty everywhere, especially in simplicity and I’m hopeful that my images will challenge the notion that one needs to travel far and wide to appreciate and enjoy nature’s splendor. My intent is to encourage viewers to explore their immediate surroundings while learning to adjust their focus and change their perspective in an effort to recognize and value the simplistic beauty that exists in their own backyards. After all, there’s no place like home.
